Ebenezer Apesegah

Technical Manager

Mr. Eben Apesegah is a seasoned Petroleum Geoscientist with over 30 years of distinguished service at the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), where he retired as the General Manager for the Geoscience Division.

He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Geology with Chemistry from the University of Ghana and a Master’s degree in Petroleum Geoscience from Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine in London.

Mr. Apesegah began his career in the Exploration Department of GNPC, working as an Exploration Geologist in the Tano Basin and later as a Wellsite Geologist during drilling operations. He subsequently spent considerable time as a Petrographer after receiving specialist training at PetroCanada in Calgary.

In the late 1990s, he co-pioneered exploration activities on the Voltaian Basin by gathering source rock samples to understand the Petroleum System of the basin. This early work significantly shaped GNPC’s subsequent exploration strategy for the area.

Throughout his career, he led exploration teams in both the Eastern and Western Basins and collaborated extensively with international partners. He also worked with Dana Petroleum in the United Kingdom on their offshore exploration block in Ghana’s Western Basin.

Mr. Apesegah was a member of the Integrated Project Team (IPT) responsible for the development of the Jubilee Field, based in Dallas, USA. He later led the GNPC Reservoir Characterization Project conducted in Guildford, United Kingdom.

Rising through the ranks, he became Manager of the Geology Department in 2014, where he reorganized the department into six specialized subdivisions - Exploration Geoscience, Development Geoscience, Geochemistry, Petrophysics, Operations Geology, and Geomatics Engineering. This restructuring significantly enhanced departmental efficiency and excellence, with many team members now leading major activities within the corporation.

He also initiated the modern Volta Basin Exploration Project in 2015, using a multidisciplinary team to procure expert consultants, oversee seismic data acquisition, and coordinate international competitive tender processes for the acquisition of 2D regional seismic data. A series of technical workshops ensured cross-functional alignment throughout this multimillion-dollar project.

In addition to his industry work, Mr. Apesegah served as a part-time lecturer in the MSc Petroleum Geoscience program at the University of Ghana for ten years, contributing significantly to academic training and professional development in the field.

Before retiring, he served as General Manager of the Geoscience Division, overseeing three key departments and advancing GNPC’s technical capabilities.

He now works as a Geoscience Consultant, focusing on talent development and providing high-level technical support to the oil and gas industry.
